5 Simple Time Management Principles
2. Learn to say ‘no’
This has been one of the hardest lessons for me to learn – and one I’m still working on executing. Saying no is often more important than saying yes. When you say yes to too many opportunities, you spread yourself thin, waste potential free time, and risk getting frustrated or overwhelmed.
3. Focus only on the task at hand – not what you have to do next
Mindfulness and complete attention to the task at hand will enable you to finish it faster (and likely better.) It will also eliminate unnecessary stress. In order to enter into your optimal focus state, make sure to put away all devices that do not apply to the task at hand, close any browsers that are irrelevant to your current task, turn off your social media notifications and/or silence the sound on your text alerts.
4. Leave a small space of time between tasks
Even if all you can squeeze in is 5-10 minutes. Do the best you can to take brief breaks between tasks, especially those of high importance. Take a quick walk, grab a coffee, chat with a colleague, answer a text, do one or two small, less important task from your list of priorities. Even better, simply relax. Maybe meditate. Taking a small ‘mental break’ will increase your motivation and improve your focus for the next task.
5. Use the weekends to your advantage
Just as getting away and completely unplugging on certain weekends is important to your performance professionally and mindset personally, so is utilizing some of your weekends to catch up on important tasks — especially those that will make the following week less stressful.
Try this tip: every other weekend, squeeze in about 2 hours each day catching up on what you consider to be important personal or professional tasks (especially those you didn’t yet get to or need to be done by early next week.) See how your week goes afterwards, and feel how much more you appreciate the remaining free time you have during the weekends.
